Who is US Powerboating?
US Powerboating is the affiliate organization of US Sailing which is the governing body for sailing in the United States.  They’ve had an established certified sailing program with hundreds of learn to sail centers across the U.S. for over 30 years.  We chose to become certified and offer US Powerboating certification due to their established presence and dedication to align and promote the U.S. Coast Guards Boating Safety Division to increase safety of the waterways we all enjoy.

What is the boat we will take the classes on?
The vessel we have chosen is a 1996 Nordic Tug 32 hull number 81.  She boasts classic styling coupled with simple and easy operation.  The 32 is owned by BBYS and underwent an extensive interior and exterior refit in the winter of 2015/16.  She is inspected and certified for both charter and instructional use.  Powered by a single Cummins 220hp diesel engine with a bow thruster, this Nordic Tug 32 represents classic styling with contemporary upgrades.  A 5kw generator, two zone reverse cycle heat and air are a few of many comfort features found onboard.  Take a look at the Nordic Tug 32 specifications and information sheet here.  She’s a beauty.  You can follow the progress of the refit on our Bay Breeze Yacht Sales Facebook page.

Where do the courses take place?
On the Nordic Tug 32, in our office for visual aids, testing and when inclement weather may arrive.  Mostly on the boat in West Grand Traverse Bay which will serve as your lodging, learning and relaxation platform headquarters

What do the courses cost and how many people can attend?
The classes are tailored ideally for two.  Certainly if there is a need for a third family merger, close friend or acquaintance, we will make every effort to accommodate if the circumstances work.  More than three is likely too many.  We want all participants to engage in the drills and skills development with all elements of the courses.  when someone is merely watching and not participating, it’s not conducive to learning and absorbing what you set out to accomplish.  Sleeping accommodation’s are also need to be taken into consideration as the Nordic Tug 32 can comfortably sleep.  There will always be the instructor onboard during the on-water sessions and testing.

What’s included with the cost of the classes?
Most everything you need to get started with boating in the right direction. In addition to the exceptional class learning and a great atmosphere, there are no additional fees for anything class related. Clearly Traverse City is a great place to enjoy and the many options for dining, recreation and sightseeing are all at our doorstep. Check out the Trawler School Pricing and Inclusions page for specifics on what is part of the class.

What is this ACE option after the class all about and is it required?
The After Class Experience is an excellent way to drive home what you have spent hours studying and applying on the water. All too often we see people spend four days learning, pass the skills and tests, receive their certification only to return home and forget most of what was spent learning.  No it’s not required to receive your US Powerboating certification.

What should and shouldn’t I bring with me to the class?
Less is more and recall those vacations and jaunts where you used far less than what you brought!  Being prepared is good but more than what’s needed when you have to carry it around is not.  Granted if your driving to us you can leave gear in your car, but if your flying into Traverse City it’s wise to pack light.  We’ve put together a list of items and other recommendations during your visit to help with those questions.  You can always call or email us if you’re not sure.

Bay Breeze Yacht Sales reserves the option to change course dates, times, terms, condition and class vessel at any time.
